Standard 2 Artifacts

Artifact 2A

The student I chose is a female in second grade. I picked her for a few reasons. In most subjects besides math, she is right on track for grade level; not advanced and not behind. She doesn’t have any type of behavioral or emotional differences. I also have a personal connection to this student. We have connected since the first day and she often will talk to me about gymnastics, dancing, German school, her hopes of becoming an artist and illustrate for books, and many other things. She is a student that I have been able to really observe and understand because of her openness with me. I wanted to be able to write about what I observe with her and see how her learning style might be similar or different to other students in the classroom.
My student comes in almost every morning looking sleepy. She slowly walks over to her cubby, and takes out her home school folder. If a art activity is being offered in the morning such as coloring cares hearts, she will go over to that activity and do it quietly until the bell rings. If an art activity isn’t offered, the students are supposed to find a book and read quietly until the bell rings. This student normally goes over to the rug and begins talking to a peer while looking onto a book. This student really excels in math. When the students took a placement test at the beginning of the year she tested at a beginning fifth grade at the beginning of second grade. She is very confident in her math work and normally flies through it however, when she doesn’t get something in math, she becomes very quiet. This student struggles the most in reading. She has trouble getting her thoughts on paper after she reads a text but rarely asks for help. She will take the whole time and doodle a little before starting to get her thoughts on paper. If there is a writing assignment with drawing she always does the drawing first and then works on the writing after.
This student interacts with all the other students inside the classroom. She is part of a club at school called “Sassy” which is a group of girls who do gymnastics. She plays with the girls in this group the most. As for teachers, we have three teachers in the classroom on all days and on Thursdays there are four teachers. She is the closest to me and comes to me first when she has questions on her work or just wants to chat. She often asks if she can say inside and eat lunch with me or if I can go down to the cafeteria and eat with her. She is most interested in drawing and creating new things. When we have choice time in the classroom, she is often found drawing, making something with duct tape, or making jewelry with beads. She seems to make friends easily however, she has been with this group of students for two years now so not many new connections have been made. She tends to like to play with a group of students more but when it becomes too many kids or too much going on, she separates herself and plays alone for a little.
This students learns best with hands on activities or when drawing is involved. She is a student that needs to sketch her ideas on paper first before she writes. I think remembering that and allowing her to draw writing prompts out before is a way to keep her engaged in the learning and also have an aspect she really enjoys. Lots of the students in my classroom benefit from hands on activities. Songs, dances, even if the students get to get up and add words to the word wall are the lessons the students remember. This student along with others, work best in this type of atmosphere.
