Analysis of a Single Lesson Plan Assignment:
OBSERVATION FORM
Of Emily Ramos

1).  How well did the pre-practicum student appear to carry-out the lesson plan’s objectives?  Please comment. (You should be provided with a copy of the lesson plan).

Emily was most successful in carrying-out the lesson plan’s objectives of teaching and naming the different forms of linear measurement and how to use them appropriately in real life situations.

This objective is clear and the students did a good job or measuring items in the room as chosen by their group.

Emily 's Supervising Practitioner suggested that she should have had all the students turn and read and discuss the objectives of the lesson from the white board!  This would have made sure everyone was clear and knew exactly what to do. This is not to say they didn't but it would have caused all to begin in the same place with the opportunity (if needed) to ask questions.

2). Describe positive aspects of the lesson that demonstrate the pre-practicum student’s developing skills as a beginning teacher.

Emily began the lesson very clearly speaking much slower than she normally does.  The beginning activity was a good choice of coupling the students in small groups to go around the room and measure different surfaces.  This proved to be both interactive and engaging.  This task was done, and much to our surprise, without students being uninterested, noisy or acting up.

3). Make some recommendations regarding further development of the pre-practicum student’s teaching skills.

Just a few minor suggestions of pausing once you give instruction for the students to process and then allow them to ask questions of what was just said and call on several students to confirm they all understand.

4). Comment on any limit-setting and/or management issues that may have arisen during the lesson.  (Positive and negative)
There were not any.

5). In reviewing what the students produced from the lesson or the students’ work samples, do they indicate that the objectives were achieved and that learning took place?

Yes it does seem like learning did take place.  The objectives were achieved.  Their worksheets with their results are proof of that.

6). Was the student teacher’s knowledge of the content accurate and developed enough?  If not, what recommendations can you make to the student regarding mastery of content in this area?

Emily has a very good rapport with the students and demonstrates
patience and friendliness.  This demeanor is inviting and pleasant.  From
looking at this in action it is evident that the students are not afraid to
question and show what they are learning or not.

Emily's knowledge of the content was accurate and is obviously still
developing.  Emily was available in a way of constantly having and
allowing the students’ input which showed how they each were thinking!

She shows developing strategies of being a good teacher.

Once again you were well prepared and organized. Your lesson plans continue to be thorough,  comprhensive, and well detailed.  As usual, you did a nice job creating learning experiences that made it possible for all students  to access the curriculum.  The good instructional practices and strategies that you used  helped to keep students focused, attentive and engaged.  Throughout this lesson you offered positive feedback to students and, when necessary, you calmly and patiently redirected them,

The purposes of this lesson were for students to share ideas about their books with their partners, students will listen and wait until their partners finish before responding, students will share thoughts about their book, and students will be able to share their thoughts and questions about the book.

As is your practice, you quietly got the students’ attention. You said, “Boys and girls, I’m going to call you and your partners by name over to the rug. Come over with just your books and sit where you normally do for morning meeting.

Once the group assembled on the rug, you clearly and succinctly explained what they would be doing during this time. This was accomplished smoothly. It was a good way to engage them in the learning activity and it allowed you to assess, if they were ready to begin. To ensue clarity, you reviewed what they would be doing: “This is the first time that we’re going to be discussing with to our partners about what we’re reading. First talk to your partner and decide which one of you will go first. Then raise your hand. This step-by-step approach was a good way to proceed. You waited until all the hands were raised, before you continued.  This was the beginning of each of the pairs talking about the story: asking questions about what’s happened so far, making predictions, what they like about the story, etc. The person, who listened first, was to ask his or her partner questions about the story.   While they pairs of students were immersed in discussion, you walked among the students, stopping at each pair to listen to their conversations and comments as well as briefly joining the discussion before moving to other students.  At each stop you listened, offered suggestions, support, and comments about the story they were reading.

You did an excellent job implementing this lesson. Students were actively involved in the learning process.  At the end of the lesson each pair of students had an opportunity to share some of their thoughts and predictions about the story.

You have developed effective management skills Students know your expectations for transitions, standards for behavior and how to work cooperatively in groups. By maintaining a positive demeanor, and with a steady, calm, and respectful manner you were able to keep the students on task and redirect them if needed. You made sure to praised and encouraged them, while also challenging them to do their best work.

Finally, over the last several months you have grown considerably, and you continue to demonstrate increasing skill, competence and confidence as an educator.   During this lesson you exhibited a high level of skills, respect and regard for all students. Good job.
